I would argue that Tallulah Bankhead didn't 'struggle' with anything as you suggest. Instead, It's clear she enjoyed the things in life that bring you joy but are ultimately bad for you. The fact that she lived to be 68 is actually pretty amazing.
Celebs also smoked to keep their weight down.
I smoked age 13 to 26 working my way up to 2 packs a day before I quit cold turkey. The key to my quitting was upon waking up I said out loud “today I quit smoking’ . In the beginning I would immediately reach for and smoke a cigarette. After a Few weeks I held off until I shaved then with my coffee driving lunch dinner over cocktails etc than after about 3 months I retired for the day and realized I hadn’t smoked all day. The next morning my cravings were gone and I have never craved nor smoked a cigarettes since going on 40 years. NOTE: for a few months after I quit I had episodes where I smashed furniture and got violent not with people but my own possessions …..it is said nicotine is harder to quit then heroin/smack…………FMPOV……I AGREE……keep trying don’t get down on yourself you will succeed in quitting…..
If you are going to tell these kinds of stories, you need to tell the truth. Amanda Blake did not die of cancer, but died of HIV/AIDS in 1989.
I haven't smoked for over 40 yrs. My girlfriends have also stopped smoking. It wasn't too hard for me to quit because I was never a heavy smoker. But when my younger brother died and I saw my sister and niece smoked. I came close to smoking a cigarette. I can't imagine someone smoking up to 100 cigarettes. I'm so glad that more people have quit smoking. It's really terrible to think that because of smoking, you can have a heart attack, get cancer or can't breathe. It's not worth it.
Smoking was ubiquitous in many professions during this time. My dad was an engineer and nearly all engineers smoked heavily. He didn't allow anyone to smoke in his office. My mom was a secretary before she got married and everyone smoked in offices. She found all the second hand smoke disgusting as she didn't smoke.
I love Jim Varney as Ernest P. Worrell. I was actually shocked to learn he had smoked.
Smoking ruined Lucy's voice. Her speaking voice in later years was almost unbearable to listen to.
Sad to see so many celebs fall victim to this addiction.
My grandma used to smoke back in the day. The moment word got out they were harmful she quit, went on road trips around the world with my grandpa, and then had 3 beautiful daughters and she's still alive now. She's turning 71 soon and she still goes on long walks, babysits all her grandchildren, and even does some side jobs even after her pension. She works so hard and she is so strong and she's never even laid eyes on a cigarette since then. I am so proud of her.
I think you meant "Al Jolson", not "Al Johnson".
