I smoked for 20 years, and my mom much longer than that. Then one day Jesus set both of us free from it in an instant, and we never smoked again nor wanted to. I'm eternally grateful.
These people must have stunk to be around just because of the smoke smell... We've all heard about Jackie Kennedy's over a pack a day habit, although I've heard she said she encouraged JFK to smoke cigars while he was still alive so she could blame the smell on his cigars instead of her cigarettes.
It interests me that your commentary links smoking to lung cancer, certainly that is so. What you don't mention is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, previously called emphysema. This is an illness with strong links to smoking and invariably causes much more disability than simply lung cancer does.

Half my family members died from lung cancer and they all smoked. Terrible disease. It robbed me of extra years with some of the most loved people in my life. For what? A filthy habit that did nothing but ruin lives?

I just recently turned 62 years old. I have many great memories of growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s. One thing I did not care for was the persistent smoking that took place during this period. Movies and early TV shows glamorized this habit and as such many people passed on prematurely. I lost count of how many relatives,friends and schoolmates that are no longer around. It didn’t have to be that way.
I remember those ads William Talman did and even though his character was stern, even as a young child, i remember being sad. I'm trying to find some sympathy for John Wayne (who died two days after I was married in 1979) but smoking anywhere from 60 to 120 cigarettes A DAY for as many years as he did isn't helping. I get how hard it is to quit having quit when i was 36 after I realizedI was a bit too young to say, I've been smoking, literally, for half my life.
