The USA will NEVER be able to smelt enough aluminum to satisfy domestic demand. The electrical grid is already over capacity in many regions. It takes 17,000kwh to smelt a ton of aluminum. There is little room for upgrading the grid, which >surprise< would take tens of thousands of tons of, you guessed it, aluminum!

Last week,the Alouette Aluminum, located in Sept-Îles, ( Québec )has confirmed a major investment of $1.5 billion to modernize its facilities. This investment is part of a 20-year agreement with Hydro-Québec, which will ensure the aluminum smelter's electricity supply until 2045. The agreement also provides for a new electricity pricing formula starting in 2030.

Gee, the US has not enough raw aluminum on its domestic soil or has enough aluminum smelters to produce its domestic needs. Yep, having tariffs on products that have to imported......TrumpSmart.
